Waro (Northland) Tramway Area
Waro is the Maori word for coal, and the Tainui tribe was known to use coal for their cooking fires. So it is not surprising that there is a railway station on the North Auckland Line that was called Waro and is the centre for a number of coal mines and a lime works. A number of tramways served these industries between 1889 and 1955. The following table lists the known tramways operated by individual companies with links to their own pages.
An important resource is titled "Hikurangi, The Story of a Coal Mining Town" by Madge Malcolm. THis publication has not been critically analysed yet so significantly more material should be able to be added to this and child pages in the future
