Origin
The Origin of the F class Locomotive goes back to the very early days of planning for the Dunedin and Clutha Railway in Otago. Following the passing of the Railway Act 1870, requiring all future railway lines be built to 3'-6" gauge (1067mm) the motive power requirements for the Otago railway were also being determined and the outline requirements were probably defined by William Blair and approved by John Blackett working for the Otago Provincial Council at the time.Tenders were called for 3 locomotives with the successful contractor being Neilson and Company. These duly arrived at Port Chalmers on December 6 1872 on the ship Palmerston.
