Glenavy Waitaki North - - 2/7/1895 There was a railway station on either side of the Waitaki. That on the one side was called Waitaki North, and that on the other Waitaki South. On the ground that it was expedient that there should be only one Waitaki station, a public meeting the other day passed a resolution that the name of the north station should be changed to “Glenavy”. There was also a sentimental consideration before the meeting, which was that the township, which was a thriving one, and immediately adjacent to the railway station, was founded during the Premiership of the late Mr Ballance, and it was therefore decided to ask that it should be called Glenavy in memory of Mr Ballance, Glenavy being the name of that statesman's birthplace.
