The Te Kuha Branch was originally constructed to serve a sawmill and opened on 1st April 1912. It was extended to Cascade in 1926 to serve the Cascade Coal Mine with its coal transported down a 12km long flume following the line of Cascade Creek. With the flume being destroyed by floods in 1954, operations ceased, and later reopening saw the coal being trucked to Denniston.
The Branch Line was further extended to ultimately connect with the Inangahua Line in 1942, and opened to NZR traffic on 5 December 1943 at which point it was renamed the Stillwater Westport Line.
