Kaihoka encompasses the area north of the Whanganui Inlet on the seaward side of Golden Bay, and accessed by road from Puponga. As was typical of the land around the inlet there which had large areas of swamp and many of these became worthwhile areas to harvest flax. As Kaihoka was a separate area to the north and had a substantial flax mill called the Lunar Flaxmill.

There is not a lot of information available about this flaxmill and the current sparse details are taken from the Quail Maps. This mill is mentioned in several oral histories available at the National Library.
