The first issue of the Observer was produced in May 1944 following along the lines of its British equivalent. It appears to have been a solo effort by Tom McGavin acting as Editor, and Secretary/Treasurer of the new Railway Correspondence Society. Within a year the Society was to get a new name The New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society, and go on to produce regular issues of The New Zealand Railway Observer. Issue 1 consisted of a few specialised articles and some general news
as follows:
The New Zealand Correspondence Society.
