The first issue of the Observer was produced in June 1944 along the lines of its British equivalent. It appears to have been a solo effort by Tom McGavin acting as Editor, and Secretary/Treasurer of the new Railway Correspondence Society. Within a year the Society was to get a new name The New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society, and go on to produce regular issues of The New Zealand Railway Observer.
