Duplicate Station Names

While NZR had a general policy of 'each Station Name will be unique', and the normal way to get round this was to add North or South to one of them, as in Palmerston and Palmerston North. There were however, still some that got around the rules. Sometimes this was due to one being in the North Island and one in the South, but sometimes also with one already having been closed and a new one opened later.

As computer systems cannot differentiate implied differences, we need to make each station name is unique. I have adopted the principle of adding a District letter in brackets behind any duplicates, i.e. Waverley appears on both the Eyerton Branch and the Marton New Plymouth Line. The Southern one therefor becomes Waverley(C) for Canterbury, and the Northern one Waverley(T) for Taranaki. That has also created a difficulty in that a number of Districts have the same starting letter. I have therefore had to define the code letters first.

The following is a list of the 16 Districts that have had railways, with their code letters;

R - Northland

A - Auckland

W - Waikato

B - Bay of Plenty

K - King Country

T - Taranaki

M - Manawatu

H - Hawkes Bay

P - Wairarapa

L - Wellington

M - Marlborough

N - Nelson

W - West Coast

C - Canterbury

O - Otago

S - Southland
