|Lumsden frequently experiences  long dry spells in the summer and considerable sums are spent carting water  to the residences. The situation was aggravated recently when a sewage scheme  was commissioned and flush toilets were provided at all the houses.

|The Department is involved in  the Lumsden Township section of the reticulation scheme where there are 16  railway houses all on rain water tanks and the operating buildings – i.e.  station, Road Services, locomotive depot, hut compound, and gang amenities –  all supplied from a well and reticulated from two locomotive vats.

|The station yard supply is from  two shallow wells which are both inadequate in summer and are subject to  unacceptable levels of contamination. A chlorination plant was installed in  1973 to reduce the bacteriological contamination but the quantity of water is  a continuing problem. To conserve Lumsden water supply during the summer, the  Kingston Flyer locomotive makes unscheduled stops for water at a trackside  vat near Athol but despite this, there is inadequate water for normal use at  Lumsden.

Lumsden Elbow - - 2/11/1977 Lumsden frequently experiences long dry spells in the summer and considerable sums are spent carting water to the residences. The situation was aggravated recently when a sewage scheme was commissioned and flush toilets were provided at all the houses. Lumsden Elbow - - 2/11/1977 The Department is involved in the Lumsden Township section of the reticulation scheme where there are 16 railway houses all on rain water tanks and the operating buildings – i.e. station, Road Services, locomotive depot, hut compound, and gang amenities – all supplied from a well and reticulated from two locomotive vats. Lumsden Elbow - - 2/11/1977 The station yard supply is from two shallow wells which are both inadequate in summer and are subject to unacceptable levels of contamination.
