The first issue of Railfan came out in December 1994 being a collaborative effort between Karl Morris, Reid McNaught and Ian Munro. It continued to appear quarterly, providing a spread of current Railway news, a strong focus on progress of heritage groups, and a wealth of in-depth articles covering every aspect of NZ railway locomotives, rollingstock, operations and facilities, all profusely illustrated and presented as a high quality publication. For the last years, publication was manages by Karl and Reid, but when Reid passed away in 2019, Karl decided to also retire after producing only a couple more 'solo' issues.
